Do Ho Suh – City of London
'Bridging Home', 2018
‘Bridging Home’ is an artwork structure modelled after artist Do Ho Suh’s family home. The sculpturework is installed on a pedestrian overpass over a major carriageway at London Liverpool Street. The artwork sits at an angle and offset to the bridge, allowing views from ground level and from upper storeys of neighbouring buildings. The self-supporting steel structure is clad in carved and finished wooden walls and panels decorated with traditional Korean calligraphy. PFC moulding recreates detailed Korean roofing and the garden is made of an artificial bamboo arrangement. Lights are installed on a timer to create the illusion that “somebody’s home” after dusk.
The work was entirely designed and fabricated at the White Wall Workshops under EN1090 structural regulations, then delivered and installed over a dual carriageway in the City of London. Extensive engineering and research into the appropriate materials was required to ensure that the artwork would not exceed the pedestrian bridge weight loading whilst remaining weatherproof and durable through exposure to high winds.
