El Anatsui, Tate Turbine Hall

'Behind the Red Moon', September 2023

Behind the Red Moon is the 2023 Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern, produced by the White Wall Company. It consists of three large-scale sculptures by El Anatsui, assembled and installed by White Wall using enormous hand-made metal fabrics produced by the artist’s studios in Ghana and Nigeria from millions of bottle caps. The final components measured 24 metres by 24 metres and 19 metres by 30 metres in height.

In order to fulfil the requirements of this challenging commission, The White Wall designed and fabricated bespoke hanging systems for each of the works, as well as designing suitable oversized packaging for the international shipment, and reworking every component in The White Wall Company workshop to prepare it for installation.

The White Wall Company spent a month in the Turbine Hall hand stitching together the pieces into their final forms.
