Maarten Baas, Paddington

Real Time, 2021

Production design, fabrication, and installation of Maarten Baas’s clock ‘Real Time’. The artwork is located across from the Elizabeth Line entrance to Paddington Station, 7.8m above the pavement. The artwork consists of a 2.5m wide modular LED screen to both faces to present a continuous film of timekeeping (the artist marking and removing the hands of the clock). The artwork is for permanent display, and is clock is to attached perpendicular to the building on a cantilevered support bracket to allow viewing from Spring Street and along Eastbourne Terrace. The clock sculpture is supported with a steel bracket concealed within the entrance façade panel work and secured to the primary steelwork of the building, and clad in a secondary steel framework and rolled aluminium.

The installation of the artwork required the closure of part of a busy carriageway, and a complex installation at height.
